Amethyst has been prized for its beauty and its legendary energies for thousands of years, and it has long been viewed as a stone of royalty, utilized in crowns, scepters, and the rings of bishops. From the Pharaohs of Egypt to British monarchs, Amethyst crystals have been used in countless royal jewelry. Neolithic people in Europe used it at least as early as 25,000 BCE. Mined in Egypt during the first Dynasty (2920-2770 BCE), Amethyst was used for beads, bracelets, amulets, and funeral scarabs. Amethyst was worn by the first Christians and later bishops. It is worn in the Christian church to signify high rank, victory over worldly passion and spiritual power. According to the 18th century Archbishop of Mainz - amethyst instills in humble souls the constant thought of heaven.

Early Greek and Roman societies placed high value on this stone. Amethyst is said to have been the ninth stone in the Breastplate of the High Priest of Israel, and one of 10 stones upon which the names of the tribes of Israel were engraved. During the Middle Ages, Amethyst was believed to be an antidote against poison. In northern Europe, it was used as a charm against witchcraft. According to Leonardo da Vinci, Amethyst crystals increased intelligence and dispelled evil thoughts. By the mid-17th century, Amethyst was as precious as diamonds. Amethyst is a variety of Quartz which occurs either in crystalline or massive form. The presence of manganese in clear Quartz produces Amethyst, while additional amounts of iron content vary the purple coloration. The deepest Amethyst colors occur in those crystals from Uruguay, Siberia, Africa, and Colorado. The most common occurrence is a medium purple color which is found in Brazil. Amethyst balances out emotional highs and lows, and is helpful for depression and bipolar disorders, promoting emotional centering. It dispels anger, rage, fear, and anxiety. Alleviating sadness and grief, Amethyst is helpful for people about to make the transition through death and supports coming to terms with loss.

Amethyst derives from the Greek word amethystos, which is equivalent to the expression "not drunk" and was worn to prevent drunkenness. Ancient Romans drank wine from Amethyst cups, and for millennia people wore Amethyst amulets to prevent intoxication. Traditionally, it was also worn for its sobering effect on other overindulgences such as quitting smoking, drug use, and physical passions, supporting sobriety. The Greeks believed that the Amethyst endows upon the wearer more firmness of character, which provides a protection against magic, homesickness, evil thoughts and drunkenness. Moreover, it protects the wearer against invasion of the mind by evil forces. It transforms bad thoughts into optimism and provides a release from false friends, who are simply kept away.

Minerology:  Amethyst is a crystal Quartz, part of the group that form large visible crystals. Its color is due to the traces of quadrivalent iron that it contains, which are lodged in the crystal lattice. It is formed hydrothermally from silicic acid solutions of magmatic or sedimentary origin, mainly in hollows formed by gas bubbles in volcanic rock, but occasionally also in clefts and rocks with cracks and passages running through them. A hollow cavity in rock lined on the inside with amethyst crystals is called an Amethyst druze.

Mythology:  Amethyst's color comes from iron, but according to Greek mythology - the God of wine, Bacchus, was offended by Diana, the Huntress. In revenge, he declared that the first person he met in the forest would be eaten by his tiger. A beautiful maiden called Amethyst was on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana when she met the Tiger. Calling on the goddess to save her, she turned into a sparkling white crystal. Repenting, Bacchus poured wine over her, producing the stone's characteristic purple hue. Also, the name of the Amethyst is derived from the Greek word amethustos and means 'non-inebriated'. Its sober, clearing effect was already known in antiquity and the crystal itself was, therefore, highly prized. In the middle ages, Konrad of Megenberg quite aptly defined the amethyst as a mineral that makes a person better, disperses bad thoughts, brings good common sense and makes one mild and gentle. Hildegard of Bengen left us information on its healing effects on skin diseases and swellings, and in Arabic countries we know that Amethyst was put under the pillow to prevent nightmares. According to ancient legend, the stone was thought to cause the wearer to have unusual and bewildering dreams.

Emotions / Psychological Uses:  Amethyst can help one identify the root causes behind behaviors, habits and disease. It has traditionally been used to counter addictive behavior and thought patterns. It lends clarity of mind and makes it more difficult for alcohol, drugs and other addictions to alter one's mood. This powerful ally assists one in recognizing one's responsibility as a spiritual being having a physical experience. It can help those who are prone to dissociation or playing the victim to recognize their inherent power and their ability to align their physical reality with their spiritual purpose. Amethyst is helpful for those who do not feel that they are native to the Earth plane, or who experience a constant longing for a 'home' on other worlds, systems or dimensions. Amethyst is also used to treat psychic disturbances, stress, nervous tension, and diminishes neurotic conditions.

Health / Physical Uses:  Amethyst boosts production of hormones, and tunes the endocrine system and metabolism. It strengthens the cleansing and eliminating organs and the immune system. Amethyst relieves physical, emotional, and psychological pain or stress, and blocks geopathic stress. It eases headaches and releases tension. This stone reduces bruising, injuries, and swellings, and treats hearing disorders. It heals diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract, skin conditions, cellular disorders, and diseases of the digestive tract. It is beneficial for the intestines, regulating flora, removing parasites, and encouraging reabsorption of water. Amethyst treats insomnia and brings restful sleep. It helps balance the nervous system and the brain. It can be used to help with symptoms of tinnitus, nerve disorders, or brain imbalances. Amethyst's energy also supports oxygenation in the blood, helping to improve the body's assimilation of oxygen and the elimination of waste gases, especially when in combination with other high iron content stones such as Hematite or Magnetite.

Application:  An Amethyst crystal should be placed as appropriate or be worn for an extended period of time either as a chain or a pendant next to the skin, or it can be just held and contemplated in meditation. Place Amethyst on the 3rd eye to aid meditation and visualization. Before applying to the body in healing, placing the crystal directly on the area close to the relevant organ is recommended. Amethyst can also be consumed as a crystal elixir for nervous disorders and bowel complaints, or applied externally for skin conditions. When placed on the forehead or under the pillow, it soothes migraine headaches, insomnia, nightmares, stimulates pleasant dreams, helps you understand your dreams, and helps children's night terrors or fears of the dark. It helps to protect against homesickness, and enhances reiki treatments. And Amethyst can help to soothe burns and calm angry temperaments. For further effects on your mind and thoughts, place Amethyst druze or pieces of druze around the room. The energy field is so strong that the entire climate of the room will be transformed. Amethyst has been used, with excellent results, as a crystal elixir for the treatment of arthritis. It helps to neutralize pain, so it can be placed over any painful area. Amethyst should always be worn in a way that makes it visible. Amethyst fades in sunlight, so don't keep it outside for extended periods.
